A SIX WEEK ONLINE CREATIVE INQUIRY INTO SHAME, SPONTANEITY AND THE SUPER EGO

Playing at the Edge – Creative Adventures with the Inner Critic is an online workshop designed to help us get to know and learn to dance with that part of us that would rather we stayed small and not take risks – our inner critic.

The workshop has been designed to take place across six different 2 hour sessions to allow us to experiment and explore together in a safe and playful online environment and then take our heightened awareness into our day to day lives to see what more we can learn about the inner critic in its natural environment.

Over the six sessions we will cover the following:

  • The anatomy of the Inner Critic and the structure of shame
  • Getting to know our Inner Critic through a variety of creative means including embodied practices, artwork, symbolic modelling, mindfulness, movement and gestalt experiments.
  • Explore a series of maps and models that help us to better dance with our inner critic
  • A simple process for dealing with the Inner Critic
  • Action learning sets through which to support each other’s learning

A maximum of 16 participants will form a cohort that goes through each session and we will tailor and adapt the experience based on the particular needs and interests of the group.  Sessions will take place via a secure Zoom room and for the best experience we recommend participants join from a quiet, private space with a reliable broadband connection (ideally wired rather than wireless)  You will be sent a pack of creative materials and other resources in advance of the first session.   Each session is 2 hours in length with the exception of the first which is 2.5 hours to facilitate introductions and orientation.

In his 2017 TEDx talk Steve Chapman talks about learning to dance with the Inner Critic rather than constantly trying to battle it.  He tells the story of using creative methods to better understand the part of him that despises his creativity, turning his inner critic from an ultimate authority to an irritating annoyance.

This talk gives a good sense of the spirit and philosophical/psychological grounding of these workshops.

NOTE: This work can be extremely rewarding, liberating and challenging. It requires a degree of resilience and capacity for self support in the face of inner criticism which can be painful to see and experience. We expect participants to be able to support themselves in the face of these challenges and would like to invite you to consider your levels of support before signing up for the programme. If you would like to speak to Steve our Simon before signing up then please contact us
It is important to us that these workshops are both value for money but also accessible to all so we hope this is a price that does that.  However if you would like to attend but do not have the financial means to afford this price then bursaries are available.  Please e-mail sc@canscorpionssmoke.com to find out more.
